Summer in Switzerland… wild flowers & wild antics!
Forget about the snow and take a trip into the sparkling heights of Switzerland this summer! With Swiss Hostels shining the light on budget accommodation year round, you’re guaranteed plenty of pennies to spend on having fun…
Switzerland is a summertime trip every mountain-loving backpacker should take! The snow season is usually when this mountainous country is on your radar but the summer season is equally as stunning. Crystal clear lakes, wild flowers swaying in the mountain breeze, hiking galore and fun activities await. Swiss Hostels are the ‘go to’ website, which lists a multitude of budget backpacker accommodation to ensure your trip hits new highs without breaking the bank.
The Bernese Oberland has a host of hostels, adventure sports and exciting activities to keep your spirits high. Interlaken & Grindelwald are two spots which have plenty going on in the summer months. Jump aboard the gondola ride from Grindlewald to First. From there you can kick start your adrenaline rush by hopping onto the First Flyer – like a seated zip wire. “Secured in the stable harness, up to 4 people whiz along the 800 metre long steel cable from First to Schreckfeld at a top speed of 84 kilometres per hour.” Wow… hold onto your hat as you get a birds-eye view of the alpine meadows below as you whizz through the swiss air! You can also hire ‘trotti-bikes’ (a kind of downhill scooter) from Bort station back down to the valley towards Grindelwald (helmet included!).
And, don’t miss Jura ‘Three Lakes’ – a beautiful summertime destination with its vineyards, picturesque villages and of course the lakes! Take a boat trip on the lakes of Biel, Murten and Neuchâtel, or along the river Aare to appreciate the area to the full. It’s kind of random but don’t miss the Omega Museum, a watchmaker’s museum dedicated to this brand which has been based in this region for more than 100 years. It has a fascinating history, including a section of the museum dedicated to the company’s part played in NASA’s manned space programme for more than 45 years. Hiking is also well worth doing, particularly to the Chasseral, a nature reserve which is the region’s highest point, is. From its summit at an altitude of 1607 m, the all-around panorama across lakes and valleys is truly breathtaking. Pass meadows of wild flowers in the early stages of the walk and keep an eye out for the multitude of wildlife found in this region.
Stay at Lago Lodge, a stunning hostel with its own built-in microbrewery where they produce delicious organic beer.
When you’re ready for a bit of culture, head to Zurich, which is home to over 50 museums and 100 art galleries as well as a multitude of cafes, bars and clubs. During the summer you can even find outdoor nightclubs, and with no official closing hours, this could easily turn into a dance marathon! To cool off on a hot day, lakeside and riverside bathing are popular pastimes, both found right in the heart of the city! If retail therapy is your thing, Zurich’s shopping mile ‘Station Road’ – the Bahnhofstrasse – is hugely popular for top notch labels, jewellery, and of course, watches! Even if you’re just window shopping, take a wander down this notorious street or stop for a coffee and watch the world go by. Zurich’s overall quality of life is frequently voted the best in the world… head over and see for yourself why that is!
