Mad Manchester:

Manchester - night scene

The original hostel is Hatters Manchester, the building of which was a hat factory… rather apt with the ‘wherever I lay my hat’ catchphrase of the backpacker community! Next up came its ‘little sister’ 3 star hostel Hilton Chambers, which is walking distance away, with both of them nestled in Manchester’s coolest location, the Northern Quarter. Manchester has a varied and diverse history, including being the world’s first industrial city. These days it’s been given a face-lift and there are a number of industrial heritage sites to visit. The global recognition of being home to Old Trafford and Manchester football team has also helped to move it up the league of glory!

The hostels decor is extremely cool and the Northern Quarter, where the hostels can be found, retains a unique character and charm too. With interesting architecture, an abundance of history and an alluring nightlife, you’ll enjoy wandering the neighbourhood and hanging out in the hostels in equal measure. The network of trams, trains and buses make it an easy city to get around though, and live gigs vamp up the music scene at many cool hang-outs dotted throughout. Nicknamed ‘Madchester’ in the late 80s, nightlife remains an integral part of city life. Canal Street – the gay capital, and Curry Mile – jam-packed with curry houses, are other popular hang out spots in this vibrant university town.

Voted ‘Europe’s Capital of Culture’ in 2008, Liverpool has an abundance of extraordinary culture and heritage, particularly evident around its impressive waterfront. Stepping away from the more prominent sights, discover plenty of hidden gems… Lark Lane for example – popular for its Bohemian vibe with quirky market stalls, funky bars and affordable restaurants.
