Golden sandy beaches, enticing clear waters and sun-kissed surfers are what dreams are made of. You may think that this is all done and dusted in the UK… but you’re wrong! The Cornish surf scene continues throughout the Autumn/Winter seasons, with waters warmed up from the summer sun and consistent swells to enjoy. Surfers’ Paradise

With its chilled out backpacker atmosphere, Cohort is a surfers’ paradise – a home away from home. Cohort means ‘a gang of people having a shared experience’ and let me tell you, they’ve perfected it! In one of the most breath-taking parts of the UK and with extraordinary reviews, it’s easy to see why Cohort attracts so many.

It was back in April 2015 when keen travellers Lee and Daniel Strickland finally flung open the doors of Cohort after a manic 4 month renovation period. They needed a new challenge after their success with a previous B&B. “As soon as we walked in, we fell in love with it and couldn’t believe we hadn’t thought of a hostel before, as we have travelled extensively and always stayed in hostel,” Lee recalled.

Funky Hangout…

And all their hard work and determination has paid off – they certainly know what travellers need. Today, as you step inside, feast your eyes on a breathtaking Grade 2 listed building… previously a Chapel and Schoolrooms, transformed into a travellers’ funky hangout.

Originally built in 1854, Lee and Daniel have preserved the awe-inspiring triple heightened ceilings, whilst creating a bright and fun décor. Large open social spaces, with features such as quirky kitchen ‘colander’ lampshades, all add to the charm of the Cohort Hostel and make it well suited to backpackers of today. Cohort boasts 60 beds which can be found in 6 dorm rooms and 3 privates. Some dorms even have private bed pods! With your own personal lighting, USB port and storage locker, you’re soon worlds away from hostel life. For those that like to update everyone on their travels, Cohort also has superfast broadband at a whopping speed of 200mb!

With an outside area fit for any sun seeker, it offers four picnic tables, places to store your surf board and a pumping speaker system. With the added bonus of being an evening sun trap, on a warm(ish) autumn evening it’s the perfect place to sip a chilled Cornish Ale (at rock bottom prices) with your buddies. The helpful, friendly staff will ensure you feel part of the Cohort family during your stay and keep you informed of their movie nights, or any other local events you should know about.

Action packed

The atmosphere and cheap drinks isn’t all that’s on offer however. The countless activities in the area are certainly something to write home about. Surfing, kayaking, go karting and fishing are all a short distance away. Visit the infamous Tate Museum, only 10 minutes away – the many inspiring art galleries dotting along the labyrinth of cobbled lanes, may encourage you to pick up a paintbrush too! With the Guildhall just a stone’s throw away, live music, tribute bands and ‘fair’ Wednesdays (jewellery and home-made goodies galore), you’ll always have something to do!

I asked Lee what was a ‘must see’ in the local area. ”We always tell people not to leave Cornwall without seeing the Minack Theatre, St Michael’s Mount and walking to Zennor along the coast path from St Ives,” she tells me. And don’t let the five mesmerising, local beaches slip your mind. As well as hitting the surf, blustery autumnal walks along sandy, peaceful stretches of coast are a perfect way to work up an appetite. The 50 bars and eateries will make sure you’re fed and watered well… for such a small town, that’s a pretty impressive number!

Look it up…

So, if you look under Cohort in the Cambridge English Dictionary, it will tell you what to do… gather together a gang of people and have a top-notch shared experience… and what better place to do this in than St Ives?

Cohort’s Surf ‘n Stay package is just £80 per person for a group of 6 or more (2 nights accommodation + 2 surf lessons) or £90 per person for 2 – 5 people.
