August 2017 Q&A: Highland Experience Tours
For our August Q&A we’ve got chatting with Brian Sharp, driver/guide extraordinaire with Highland Experience, a fabulous tour company based in Scotland. With a strong background in exploring the wilds of Scotland, Brian has many an interesting story tucked up his tartan sleeve…
1. When did Highland Experience start up & when did you join the company?
HEX was established in 2005. I have been with the company since the beginning of 2017.
2. What’s your role & what do you enjoy about working for HEX?
I am a driver/guide. I get to take people to some of the most amazing places in Scotland. Sharing places that are special to me with people from all over the world is probably one of the things I love most about my job.
3. Where have you covered on your tours?
I have taken people to Ullapool in the far North of the Scottish Highlands. I’ve been out to the Hebrides and watched Whisky fanatics discover their dream drams on Islay. A particularly popular tour is a gigantic 370 mile loop of the Highlands from Edinburgh.
4. What three words would you use to describe HEX tours?
Friendly. Professional. Adventurous!
5. What are HEXs most popular tours?
6. What type of people come on your tours?
There is no set demographic to any tour I’ve done. We cater for everyone. My tours always have a complete mix of ages and nationalities and we are one of the only tour companies that allow families with small children on board.
7. What backpacking experiences have you had?
I’ve spent days up in the North of Scotland running the mountains and having some wild experiences, camping out. I’ve spent a lot of time in the Lakes also. There’s so much to see in Scotland. I’ve run most of the mountains we see on tour so this adds a different edge to the tours I do.
8. What is your favourite overseas travel destination?
I haven’t been yet, but I have an ambition to go to Washington in 2019 to climb Mt Rainier. I’ve been fascinated with it since I was a teen.
9. What’s your favourite travel memory?
I have so many experiences in the Scottish mountains. When I was 17 I spent 4 days driving all of the North coast route with my mates. That was an experience that will stay with me a long time! My favourite day in the mountains was running An Teallach in Dundonnell last December on the most clear blue skies day I’ve ever had!
10. Finally, what’s your favourite tipple?
Whisky of course! My favourite dram at the moment is Deanston 12 but I also have a wee soft spot for Bunnahabhain.
